“Problems are the roots of community Power” – The Power Conference shifts the conversation from advocacy to solution creation. The conference will leverage the skills, talent, and creativity of community organizers to design solutions for local problems. The Power Conference also leverage the philanthropic activism movement that positions philanthropy as tools of community leaders to create change.

Join us on March 20th, 2021 to hear creative solutions, innovative funding strategies, and community centered design ideas.

The Power Conference is hosted by the Justice Love Foundation (JLF). The JLF’s mission is to increase resources of community leaders with the hope of improving the quality of life of local organizers. The JLF believe that the key to systemic change rest on the creative minds of community leaders and the support of philanthropic institutions.

The Power Conference will showcase amazing stories from community, performances from community and community leaders.

The Future of Community Centered Education

The theme of this discussion today is whether sustaining community involvement will be more difficult than returning to formal sporadic connections between schools and community. While families and community leaders might step up to help schools, it is often on school districts to make the first move to work more closely with the community. How do we forge a new path forward?

Community Centered Criminal Reform

Across the country and in North Carolina, education leaders and policy makers are wrestling with the trends in student-discipline-data that calls into question, school safety. For our conversation today, we will explore the potential power that communities hold to disrupt the school to prison pipeline.

Redefining a Healthy Community

We know that research suggest a relationship between communities and schools. The healthier the community, the healthier the school. If we are looking for changes in a school, then we must look at what is changing in the communities that feed into the school. Our conversation today will lean on the significance of community leaders in transforming the health of neighborhoods, families, and students.

Community Driven Innovations

Listen to our stories, understand the impact the current system has on young and old alike. Help us positively effect those in need by altering current thinking by centering a response around the community and human centered design.

Disproportionately, Black, Brown, and Poor students are disciplined in school settings that often results in some form of school suspension. For our conversation today, we will explore the potential power that communities hold to disrupt the school to prison pipeline.

Some ask when will it be fair? Where does a pipeline to jail divert to a pathway to happiness, success, and contribution to one’s wellbeing? Can society continue to waste generations, regardless of color or ethnicity?

Where do You Live?

Communities form the bedrock of our connection to humanity. It is where we learn, live, and make our way through society. Can equity be denied because of our economic standing?

Environment

Community Designed Healthy Neighborhoods

If we are looking for changes in a school, then we must look at what is changing in the communities that feed into the school. We also know that transformation is spearheaded by community leaders that have the trust of the people. The community leader becomes the local change agent for healthy environments. Our conversation today will lean on the significance of community leaders in transforming the health of neighborhoods, families, and students.

Panelists

Tim Humphrey

Vice President | IBM Chief Data Office

He is also the Senior State Executive for IBM in North Carolina and Senior Location Executive for IBM in Research Triangle Park, NC, one of the company’s largest sites.

Active in the community, Tim engages in several non-profit fundraising activities, special events, and volunteer efforts. He serves as a board member for many local non-profit organizations, including UNC World View, UNC Health, the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Wake County.

Ann McColl

Co-Founder | The Innovation Project

Ann serves as legislative director for the State Board of Education, general counsel for the North Carolina Association of School Administrators and the North Carolina School Superintendents Association, general counsel for the North Carolina Association of Educators, and legal counsel and director of policy for the North Carolina School Boards Association.

Frances Bisby

Founder | Transformation Exchange, LLC

Frances Bisby grew up in Wilson, North Carolina and came to Raleigh to attend NCSU earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. After almost 20 years in transportation design and planning, she retired following her heart into the community and founded her own consulting firm, the Transformation Exchange, LLC, in 2016. Francis also champions the underserved in Wake County through a philanthropic initiative called the Community Partner Network (CPN).

Dennis Gaddy

Eexecutive Director | Community Success Initiative

Dennis serves as the Criminal Justice Chair for the North Carolina NAACP, on the NC Governor Cooper’s Statewide Reentry Collaborative, and as a member of the North Carolina Committee for Racial and Ethnic Disparities (NC-CRED). He was recognized with the Goodman Award (Jim Goodman- President, Capital Broadcasting/WRAL Television) for exceptional Leadership by Leadership Triangle.

Letha Muhammad

Executive Director | Education Justice Alliance (EJA)

Letha is working to advance the organizations mission to dismantling the School to Prison and School to Deportation Pipeline in her local school district, Wake County Public Schools. As well as in other districts across North Carolina. She also serves on the Coordinating Committee for Every Child NC a statewide coalition working to ensure equitable funding for our public schools. Letha is also a member of Muslim’s for Social Justice (MSJ) and on the steering committee of the Movement to End Racism and Islamophobia (MERI).

Dr. Alicia Anderton

Professor | Wake Technical Community College

Dr. Anderton participates in several projects namely Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) for young women committee and a First in the World (FITW) project. In addition, she has taught Red Hat Linux, cyber security, networking, and helpdesk support courses.

Educational Background: Dr. Anderton holds a Doctorate in Management from the University of Maryland University College in College Park, Maryland; a Master’s of Science in Computer and Information Systems from the University of Maryland University College in College Park, Maryland; a Bachelor’s of Science in Computer and Information Systems from North Carolina Wesleyan College; in Rocky Mount, North Carolina and an Associate’s of Applied Science in Computer and information Systems from Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Tamisha Torres Walker

Executive Director | Safe Return Project

Tamisha has been a community organizer and known advocate on issues related to mass incarceration and racial disparity in the criminal justice system since my release from incarceration in 2009. She oversees Safe Return and its many projects at the local, state, and National levels.

Tamisha is currently a Rosenburg Foundations Leading Edge Fund fellows, focused on advancing the work of social justice towards building a movement of highly skilled formerly incarcerated and convicted leaders who are fighting for affirmative and universal protection against all forms of discrimination based on criminal history.

Farmer Small

Independent Consultant | Company Name

As an independent consultant, Small cultivates organic food in urban spaces, creates vibrant soil and nurtures youth leadership in local food system development. For more than 25 years, Small has applied his love and appreciation for the earth, a value he received from his parents, to his work of creating meaningful work for new farmers and communities that care about vibrant local food access. As an innovative creator of national models of sustainable food cultivation and distribution Small is on the cutting edge of transforming our food systems for the better.

Maurice was awarded the Organic Pioneer Award by the Rodale Institute in its inaugural year, 2011. Maurice is a founding and active member of the Farmer x Farmer Coalition.

Tony Simmons

Executive Director | High School for Recording Arts

Tony has served as board member to such leading national school reform organizations as Edvisions, Inc., Education Evolving and Reaching At Promise Students Association (RAPSA). His association with RAPSA lead to his contribution to the report, “Seizing The Moment: Realizing the Promise of Student-Centered Learning” and to the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools report “Over-Age, Under-Credited Students and Public Charter Schools.”

Tony attended Howard University and Pace University where he earned a BA in Political Studies. He also has a Juris Doctorate from Rutgers Law School.

Ben Barge

Field Director | National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy

Ben manages the Movement Investment Project and leads NCRP’s external engagement with the pro-immigrant, pro-refugee movement. He also oversees staff travel and presentations for NCRP’s major initiatives. Prior to joining NCRP, Ben worked at the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, where he facilitated grantmaking and special projects around the racial and gender wealth gap, democracy, criminalization, environmental advocacy and public education.

James White

Senior Vice President | YMCA of the Triangle Area

Rev. White is the senior pastor of Christ Our King Community Church in North Carolina. In addition to his work as pastor, he is the Senior Vice President of Leadership Development for the YMCA of the Triangle Area. He is a member of the National Training and Leadership Development Advisory Board for the YMCA of the USA.

Rev. White is a contributing author for several different publications including, American Outlook, Planting Seeds of Hope, How to Reach African Youth, and the African American Devotional Bible.
